The year 991 saw the death of the Empress Theophanu, one of the most important rulers of the European Middle Ages. A Byzantine princess, she had been married at the age of about 12 to the 16-year-old German Emperor Otto II.; following her husband's early death, Theophanu became a mayor player on the German and European political scene, securing the Empire and the throne for her son, Emperor Otoo III. Her regency was marked by wisdom and clever diplomacy; with great self-assurance, she signed her documents in the (masculine) name of "Theophanus divina gratia Imperator Augustus". As Empress, consort and mother, with a cosmopolitan outlook on life, she made possible the influence of Byzantine art on the culture of the West. She was the first to stand up for and put into practise the idea of a European peace. In accordance with her own wish, she was buried in the church of St Pantaleon in Cologne in 991. This piece was composed by Dorothée Hahne in the year 2000 on the suggestion of the singer Maria Jonas, as a reminder of the importance of the Empress and of Europe's forgotten peaceful traditions...
